Professor Hockings developed the concept for an IUCN Green List of Protected Areas as a means to establish global standards of effective and equitable management of protected areas. Working with the IUCN and other partners, the concept was piloted in eight countries in the lead-up to the World Parks Congress in 2014. The Green List provides an evidence-based method to independently assess performance of protected areas against the standard, and to recognise those that have achieved all the criteria in the standard.
IUCN has received a substantial grant (over 2 million Euros) from the German Government to support the current development phase of the Green List, which is operating in 20 countries.
