Researcher biography

Ilyas is a PhD student under supervision of Dr Laura Sonter, Professor Stuart Phinn and Dr Matthew S. Luskin. His research interests mainly include the utilisation of large spatial data to model the compounding impact of climate change, oil palm plantation expansion, and mining developments on wildlife habitat in Indonesia, understanding deforestation patterns caused by land-use change dynamics, and evaluating the effectiveness of protected areas implementation in Indonesia.

Before pursuing graduate studies, Ilyas worked as a remote sensing-GIS technician and field researcher in the Center for Environment and Sustainability Science Indonesia. Currently, he is also involved in the Ecological Cascades Lab with Dr Matthew S. Luskin to reveal the multi-scale habitat associations of Southeast Asian wildlife using vast amounts of camera trap data through statistical and ecological niche modelling.
