Researcher biography

Juli is a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland, under the supervision of Dr Matthew Luskin and Dr Brooke Williams (Global Conservation and Sustainability Lab, QUT). Her expertise is in tropical forest conservation ecology and geospatial analysis. Her research focuses on enhancing the application of natural forest regeneration to mitigate climate change and achieve biodiversity conservation. She aims to describe natural regeneration patches across the tropics, assessing their benefits and feasibility, while also updating forest fragmentation analyses to include overlooked factors such as ghost roads (roads that are undocumented and informally constructed, often escape detection on official maps). Further, her work aims to inform decision-makers about where restoration efforts can most effectively reduce habitat fragmentation and enhance social benefits.

Juli completed her Master of Environmental Management at The University of Queensland in July 2022, where she developed her Master's thesis on investigating public awareness on the harm of recreational use of sunscreen on coral reefs, at the Great Barrier Reef. Prior to that, Jiaqi completed her Bachelor's program in Environmental Science at The Ocean University of China.
