Researcher biography

Maddison Brown is a marine ecologist and PhD candidate at The University of Queensland, School of Biological Sciences, with Professor Catherine Lovelock and Dr Valerie Hagger. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a student-athlete on the Women’s Rowing Team. Maddison completed an Honours research project at the University of the Sunshine Coast (Hons I).

Maddison is conducting a PhD on coastal marine restoration opportunities in south-east Queensland. She will use spatial analyses and habitat suitability models to prioritise restoration sites for carbon storage and various ecosystem services.

The outcomes of the project will be aimed at supporting the development of decision support models which can be used to help scale and direct restoration of marine coastal ecosystems, including wetlands, mangroves and saltmarshes. Successful restoration at scale holds the potential to act as a Nature-based Solution to climate change while providing co-benefits such as fishery habitat, nutrient cycling, cultural benefits and coastal protection.
