Researcher biography

Sofia is an Honours student at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Dr Nicola Browne and A/Prof Ian Tibbetts. During her undergraduate degree in marine biology and ecology, Sofia participated in multiple research projects, most notably investigating coral recruitment on rubble in the Great Barrier Reef.

Her research is currently focused on assessing the resilience and refuge potential of coral reefs in Quandamooka (Moreton Bay) using carbonate budgets. Carbonate budgets are an underutilised method for investigating holistic health of a reef, and through the application of this method in our unique local marine environment, we are gaining new information on potential responses of sub-tropical and turbid coral reefs to climate change.
