Researcher biography

Dr Julia Hoy is the Senior Research Manager at the University of Queensland’s Hidden Vale Research Station, where she guides and supports applied conservation research, with a focus on captive animals at the Hidden Vale Wildlife Centre. Involved since the Centre’s establishment, she helps shape the strategic direction of its ex situ research program, delivered through a long-term partnership with the Turner Family Foundation. Her research spans animal welfare, behaviour, husbandry innovation, and the role and significance of ex situ conservation, alongside predator–prey interactions, pest management, and human–animal interactions. By applying technology and practical management approaches, she works to improve outcomes for captive wildlife, inform wildlife management, and support successful reintroduction. Her work is strongly applied and collaborative, translating research into practical tools and frameworks that support conservation in practice.
